What is Geophysics?

Geophysics is a science that derives from geology and deals with the study of the physical properties of the Earth. It Includes aspects such as the research of the internal composition of the planet, the heat flow from the inside of the Earth, the force of gravity that forms the gravitational field, the attraction magnetic force exerted by an ideal magnet inside the Earth creates the geomagnetic field, and propagation of seismic waves through the rocks of earth’s crust.

What is Geochemistry?

Geochemistry studies the origin, evolution and distribution of chemical elements on Earth which are contained in the rock-forming minerals and the products derived from it, as well as in living beings, water and atmosphere.

What is Environmental geology?

Environmental geology is the application of geological knowledge to environment research. It supports diagnosis and mitigation of pollution problems, minimizing possible environment degradation or maximizing the possibility of correct use of natural or modified environment. Also deals with natural phenomenon dangers and risks (geologic and hydrometeorological) and anthropogenic (caused by human).

Danger and risk

  • Danger or threat: they refer to the probability of potentially harmful phenomenon occurrence in a period of time. Danger potential is measured with intensity and return time.

  • Exposure: it is the number of people, possessions, wealth and infrastructure susceptible of being damaged.

  • Vulnerability: it refers to the systems exposed proclivity (human settlements, infrastructure) of being damaged by a disturbing phenomenon effect.

  • Risk: it concerns with the probability of a danger to become a disaster. Possibility combination that an event occurs and its negative consequences. Factors that composed it are threat and vulnerability.

What is Geotechnics?

It is the branch of geology that deals with the application of geological principles in the research of natural materials –such as rocks- that form the earth crust involved in the design, construction and operation of civil engineering projects, as highways, railways, bridges, dams, pipelines, aqueducts, dwelling units, confinement sites and buildings in general.
